[St. Louis Trip]
• The Old Courthouse was the location of the first two trials (1847 and 1850) in the famous Dred Scott vs. Sanford case. As history recalls, Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in both the free state of Illinois and the free territory of Wisconsin before moving back to the slave state of Missouri. He appealed the case to the Supreme Court, but was denied his freedom and eventually returned back to his "owner". Ironically, the decision brought slavery to the attention of the public and ultimately helped heighten tensions that led to the Civil War.
